Darling West - While I Was Asleep

Jansen Records

Released: February 16, 2018

The last twelve months of Darling West’s musical career can hardly be described as anything else than fantastic. Since the release of their second album, ‘’Vinyl And A Heartache’’, they have played concerts all over the world, been listed on the biggest radio channels in Norway and appeared on the Top 100 Country Charts in the United States of America. They’ve been played more than 30 million times on Spotify, been booked to the biggest festivals of Norway, SXSW in Austin, Folk Alliance in Kansas City and Americana Fest in Nashville, toured with Sam Outlaw and supported Lucinda Williams. In February 2017, they also won a Norwegian Grammy for their album ‘’Vinyl And A Heartache’’.

Despite all this, the band didn’t rest on their acquired laurels, and headed straight into the studio to record their third album. This new album is called ‘’While I Was Asleep’’ and contains ten new songs. The band hasn’t changed much in the last twelve months, they are still playing their sweet, smooth and lovely mix of Americana, country and folk. Although there is a lot more drive in the music and even catchier melodies than before.

Don’t I Know You

How I Wish

As usual, I dived into another genre of music to review. Being a blogger is all about changing perspectives and crossing your own borders, while hoping to pull some people with you. This does not always turn out good, but let’s say that I have learned to like country a lot more than I did before! This is also thanks to ‘’While I Was Asleep’’ by Darling West. Because their music has a lot of influences that I like in metal (folk), I thought this would be an easier step to make.

‘’While I Was Asleep’’ would fall into the category easy listening. I didn’t have to listen a lot of times to the album to form my opinion of it, either I like it right away or I don’t. Luckily, I did. Of course this is not the kind of music I usually listen to, but that’s probably what is so nice about it, it gives my ears a bit of calm and peace! Don’t forget that the lyrics are really beautiful, and they are printed in the CD cover which is a very unique spin.

All in all, Darling West have put out a very solid album. I would definitely recommend them if you are into country and folk. I’d rate ‘’While I Was Asleep’’ by Darling West a 7 out of 10.
