HEROES DON’T ASK WHY
SOUND OF A BROKEN HEART EP
Release: May 15, 2018
Heroes Don’t Ask Why is a Finnish melodic rock metal band formed in 2015. Their debut self-titled EP, released in December 2016, got good reviews and radio airplay in many countries from Finland to Australia. Band toured Finland with some high profile acts, such as Waltari.
Their twin-guitar attack is both aggressive and in the next moment, mellow melancholic bluesy flow of notes. There’s a clear hint of a Scandinavian metal roots but with added quest for a tender guitar work.
They entered Studio Watercastle in April 2018 to record a follow-up seven song EP named Sound Of A Broken Heart and they have deepened their style with this release. The album was released 15th Of May.
1. Poisoned Well
2. Twisted Paradise
3. 15th of May
4. My Dear Friend
5. Wooden Box
6. Blink of an Eye
7. Sound of a Broken Heart
The EP starts with ‘’Poisoned Well’’, it’s a good track but not good choice for an opener in my opinion. The music starts off
really soft, but suddenly it exploded in my ears, that wasn’t very pleasant. That said, the mixing seems to be a bit off, in every song there is something wrong, one time the vocals are too loud,
in the other the guitars too loud etc. Speaking about the vocals -I’m sorry Jussi-, but it seems like he is trying too hard. Take it down a notch, sometimes less is more. Now I’m listening again,
Jussi does have a perfect voice for heavy or power metal… just a consideration.
HDAW describe themselves as melodic rock, yet I hear so many influences that the EP lost its cohesiveness. It’s like they said, ‘’well we have some metal, some hard rock and some punk rock… let’s just call it melodic metal.’’ Also, I don’t want to be that person, but the artwork is not that good, nor fitting their music. I mean these guys are working insanely hard for their music, you can definitely hear the effort they make, it deserves to look more professional. I don’t think the artwork is done by the same person as their ‘’Heroes Don’t Ask Why EP’’, because that one is really pretty and fits the theme of those songs.
Yes, the things that bother me seem like normal mistakes and can happen to every beginning band. But the way you present yourself and your music can make it or break it in this business. Nevertheless, their songs and lyrics are really good, especially ‘’Sound Of A Broken Heart’’ itself. For now, I’ll rate ‘’Sound Of A Broken Heart EP’’ by Heroes Don’t Ask Why a 7 out of 10.
