Secret Sphere - The Nature Of Time

SECRET SPHERE

THE NATURE OF TIME

Frontiers Music Srl

Release: June 2, 2017

Guitarist Aldo Lonobile formed Secret Sphere in July 1997. Early on, the band was influenced by hard rock, heavy metal, and classical music. After some lineup changes in December 1997, the band recorded their first demo, Between Story and Legend, in September 1998. The style of the demo was firmly in the symphonic power metal genre that was expanding in Italy at that time. In those 20 years, a lot has changed, as well as their sound as their line-up. Secret Sphere’s new album ‘’The Nature Of Time’’ was released June 2, 2017 by Frontiers Music Srl.

‘’She was only seven years old when, during a long coma, she heard the calling. All of a sudden, everything was clear. She realised that all it took to create a balance in the whole universe, was a true belief in what became her seven virtues: love, courage, kindness, honesty, reliance, faith and commitment. After the awakening she started spreading messages exclusively with only shapes, colours and images - avoiding words and numbers on purpose; the first too easy to mislead, the second, too close to revealing the truth. Unconditional love became the way to proceed through time and space.’’

‘’Intermission’’ is a beautiful way to open a promising album. It’s an instrumental piece with some audio fragments in it, it sounds kind of like a space station (if that makes sense). ‘’The Calling’’ is a very nice track, I really like the chorus which is super catchy! The song seems to follow up the text I have quoted earlier, I have a feeling that this is an amazing concept album!

We go on with Chapter 2, which begins with ‘’Love’’. I love the lyrics, but I miss the power on this song. Luckily, the power I was looking for is to be found in‘’Courage’’. This song might be one of my favorites on The Nature Of Time, it’s very melodic and has one of the best solos I have ever heard. I think Secret Sphere has finally shown me how to appreciate progressive metal! ‘’Kindness’’ is a very relatable song, lyric wise. To quote some of them, ‘’A smile can light up your life, a word can tear you apart’’, ‘’No one can tell how it feels to be locked away from your past’’, I’ll let those lyrics and the song speak for itself.

‘’Honesty’’ starts off a bit too slow for my liking and it takes about half the song to become a bit heavier. Same goes for ‘’Faith’’, I absolutely adore all tracks when I read along with the lyrics, but for me personally there seems to be something missing musically. ‘’Reliance’’ is a bit more on my alley, it has a bit more metal elements that I like. Despite of me being a bit of a negative Nelly, I want to say that the vocals on this album are outstanding. All vocals are done by Luppi which is super impressive. It all harmonizes heavenly.

‘’Commitment’’ is an instrumental piece, it is really nice but a bit too proggy for me to appreciate the song to the fullest. Again, I do love those solo’s though. ‘’The Awakening’’ is the longest track of the album with nearly 9 minutes of playing time. I expected a lot of progressive elements in it, but it surprised me with being heavier than the rest of the album! ‘’The New Beginning’’ is the outro track of The Nature Of Time, this track is more of a power ballad.

Despite of me being not that great at reviewing progressive metal, I think The Nature Of Time is one of the best albums that got released in 2017. It has an amazing story (concept), it is executed beautifully, and I honestly think that everyone who calls themself a fan of progressive music should definitely own this album. I’d rate The Nature Of Time by Secret Sphere an 8 out of 10.
